Evgeny’s role at Telstra saw him be instrumental in building different software applications to meet Telstra’s needs. Some of his key responsibilities included:

  • Building a private data cloud
  • · Using OpenStack and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • · Monitoring asset management and incident management processes
  • · Investigating hardware faults, performance, stability, scalability issues
  • · Configuring monitoring and alerting
  • · Building a 300TB+ Object Store cluster using Ceph – open source

Projects Evgeny has worked on

Building a 300TB+ Object Store Cluster

While at Telstra, Evgeny took it upon himself to build a 300TB+ Object Store cluster, which people then used in production. This was a file storage system for documents, and allowed Telstra to store big chunks of data, such as telemetry data from a 4G base station. Sometimes, Telstra needed to store raw data on a short/long-term basis before it could be processed. This cluster made everyone’s lives easier – and is a particularly proud moment for Evgeny.

Troubleshooting Performance Issues That Were Release Blockers

Evgeny has always enjoyed finding problems and solving them. A particular project involved him identifying around 50 different performance issues, and then handing these findings over to a solution architect. Evgeny liaised with this architect to work out which issues were most pressing, allowing them to be solved. This was a task Evgeny worked on on his own – proving he’s adaptable to both a team and solo environment.

Taking Data From On-Premises To The Cloud

While at Fugro Roames, Evgeny needed to migrate data from on-premises to AWS. Fugro Roames use automated software to take 3D images of powerlines and power poles, and that data is then read to see if there are any faults. A lot of this data was stored as part of a big tape library, with 2 computer racks’ worth of data storage also needing to be migrated to AWS as well. It was a big project, but one he relished doing.
